The Asset Inventory Challenge
An expert-level course on building an asset inventory that is true rather than tidy, and on the uncomfortable fact that almost every other security control silently depends on it. Travel the asset lifecycle rail - eight stations carrying one asset from the decision that it counts at all, through the partial sources that can see it, the reconciliation that resolves them, the unknown estate no source reaches, the person accountable for it, the consequence tier it earns, the changes and the acquisition that move it, to the controlled retirement that leaves evidence behind and the pack that answers an auditor in October and a responder at three in the morning.

What you'll learn
- Write an asset definition scoped by consequence, decide its boundary cases in writing, and establish an identity model and match ladder that let independent sources be compared rather than merely collected.
- Register every partial source with the purpose that defines its population, its owner, its extraction method, its refresh interval and the blind spot it can never cover, without nominating any of them as the inventory.
- Run reconciliation as a daily control whose product is an assigned, dated queue of disagreements, with authority declared per attribute, existence defined by observation, and the candidate-to-asset arithmetic published so the estate figure can be reproduced.
- Bound the unknown estate through routes that do not depend on enrolment, build visibility for agentless populations without sending anything to a device, and recompute and republish every coverage metric against the true denominator.
