Security Metric Design Assurance — The Metric Loop
An expert-level course in making security metrics defensible and decision-useful: trace each figure to the decision it must change, specify and version it, record and reconcile its lineage, validate it statistically, threshold it from appetite, keep it out of masking composites, present it with its evidence, and govern the catalogue until each metric is retired. Four hands-on activities in every lesson, no shell terminals, one capstone catalogue.

What you'll learn
- Map every security metric to the decision it must change, specify it with numerator, denominator, population, window, exclusions, owner and version, and retire what changes nothing.
- Record and reconcile each figure's lineage across source systems, test completeness and freshness, and validate it with sampling, confidence intervals, base rates, control charts and back-tests.
- Derive KRI thresholds from appetite and history with leading signals, escalation rules and aging limits, and design or retire composite scores so they inform rather than mask.
- Present metrics to a board and a regulator with definitions, uncertainty and an evidence trail, and govern the catalogue with ownership, change control, independent validation, effectiveness review, retirement criteria and cost.
